Label the Styrofoam cups with numbers from 1 to 5.
Cover the work surface with paper towels.
Take the ammonium nitrate from the instant cold pack:
Put on safety Lowes apron.
Put on your safety goggles and latex gloves.
Cut the top of the bag off.
Dispose of the water bag.
Pour the ammonium nitrate crystals into the plastic bowl.
Add 100 mL of distilled water to cup.
Place one of the wax paper square on the scale.
Zero the scale.
Put 10 g of Ammonia Nitrate on square with a plastic spoon.
Measure the starting temperature of the water in cup with digital infrared thermometer and record starting temperature.
Add 10.0 g of ammonium nitrate to the water in cup.
Start the timer.
Stir the solution with a plastic spoon.
Record the temperature every 15 seconds (sec) until it will constant.
Dispose of the ammonium nitrate solution down the sink.
Repeat steps 4–13 two more times, so you have at least three trials. This ensures that your results are accurate.
Repeat steps 4-14 with samples:
Cup #2: 20 g
Cup #3: 30 g
Cup #4: 40 g
Cup #2: 50 g
Dissolve any leftover ammonium nitrate in water and dispose of it in a sink.
